Nebuta Festival is one of the infamous summer festivals in Aomori. Within Aomori it’s called “Nebuta” and within Hirosaki it’s called “Neputa”. Though the pronunciation varies, all festivals refer to the float of a brave warrior figure which is carried through the center of the city, while dancers wearing a unique type of costumes dance around in time with the chant.

Aomori Nebuta Festival is held once a year. It features vivid floats shaped after famous historical and mythological Japanese characters and warriors. Unlike typical floats, the Nebuta floats are 15 to 30 feet tall, made of fragile washi paper and bamboo frame. As a finishing touch, hundreds of light bulbs are weaved throughout the floats, illumination the parade with amazing colors. The sight is absolutely breathtaking and it not be missed!
